Cabbage Soup Diet

One of the more odd but popular diets is the cabbage soup diet. The diet is based on the low calorie cabbage soup which is eaten at least once a day along with other food, for seven days in a row. As with many fad diets, it is a short term diet which proponents claim will cause you to lose 10 pounds within seven days, though most of that weight loss will likely be water weight.

The cabbage soup itself includes other vegetables with cabbage as the base, but there are no end to the recipes for the cabbage soup.

Cabbage Soup Recipe

  • 6 large green onions
  • 2 green peppers
  • 1 can of tomatoes, diced or whole
  • 3 carrots
  • 1 container of mushrooms, about 10 ounces
  • 1 bunch of celery
  • ½ head of cabbage
  • 1 or 2 cubes of bullion
  • 1 48 oz can of V8 juice
  • season to taste

Like many short term diets, there a specific food plan for each of the seven days.

For the first day you can eat all the fruits (except bananas) and cabbage soup you like and you should drink unsweetened tea, cranberry juice or water. The second day is a vegetable day, eat as much leafy greens as you can handle along with your cabbage soup, but try to avoid peas, corn or beans. For dinner on the second day, a potato with butter is acceptable.

For the third day, eat both fruits and vegetables along with the cabbage soup, but no potato today. The fourth day gets a little interesting, you should eat only bananas and skim milk along with your cabbage soup. On the fifth day, you should eat between 10 and 20 ounces of meat, preferably beef, as well as 4 to 6 whole tomatoes along with at least one serving of the cabbage soup. On this day, you should also drink 6 to 8 cups of water.

On the sixth day, you can eat as much red meat as you like today along with as many vegetables as you want, as long as you eats some vegetables. Although you should stay away from potatoes. And as always, have at least one serving of cabbage soup that day.

On the seventh and last day of the diet, you should eat brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and plenty of vegetables along with your cabbage soup.

Though you are likely to lose some weight on this short 7 day diet, since you are still eating and not starving yourself, many people will go on and off this diet regularly. If you choose to do this, be sure that you wait at least two weeks between each 7 day dieting period.
