How to Get Rid of Back Acne

While every type of acne is unpleasant and unsightly, back acne is perhaps the worst type of acne that you can have.  When your back is covered with blemishes, it can impossible to fit into your favorite strapless dress or be seen in your bikini at the beach.  Not being able to wear your favorite clothing can have a last effect on your psyche, which is why anyone who notices they are starting to get back acne looks for every possible way to get rid of it.

Back acne is caused by a number of factors, some of which we can control and others that we cannot such as genetics.  Below are a few tips to help you get rid of back acne once and for all.

Wash regularly and keep your linens clean

Acne is caused by the buildup of oil known as sebum, which clogs out pores and causes bacteria to form in the area.  In order to prevent this oil from clogging your pores, you will want to bathe regularly, using anti-bacterial soap when possible.  The anti-bacterial soap will help kill any germs that may be looking to congregate around your clogged pores, ultimately resulting in back acne.  Also, if you notice a particularly bad outbreak of back acne, you may want to shower twice a day to help keep your skin nice and clean and free of any acne forming bacteria.  Showering immediately after any activity that has caused excessive perspiration will also help reduce the amount of acne you see on your back as sweating helps further clog your pores and allows unwanted bacteria to form.

Exfoliate your skin on a regular basis

Another great way to get rid of back acne is to exfoliate your skin on a regular basis.  Exfoliating your skin is an excellent way to open your pores, making it difficult for acne forming bacteria to settle on your skin.  In order to see the best results when exfoliating your skin, you will need to experiment with different types of exfoliators such as washcloths, loofahs, and brushes.  Finding the right type of exfoliator that works the best with your skin is important if you want to see the best results.

Apply medicated cream or gel

Perhaps the most effective way to get rid of back acne is to apply a medicated cream or gel that contains either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.  These two ingredients have been proven to effectively treat back acne over the years, but it is important that you try products that contain one or other because they can interact negatively with each other if they are mixed.  Try applying a cream or gel that contains benzoyl peroxide for a week or two and see if you notice any results.  If you do not think that product is working, try switching to one that contains salicylic acid to see if it works any better.  This will allow you to accurately determine if either ingredient works more effectively with your body.  Also, because both of these ingredients tend to dry out your skin, it is important to apply an alpha-hydroxy moisturizer in the same area of your back so that your skin does not become too dry.

Eat the proper diet

There are certain foods you should avoid if you want to better prevent acne. These foods are:

  • Dairy products like cheese, milk, yogurt, etc.
  • Cooked carbs like bread, rice, chips, sugar, etc.
  • Cooked fats like fried foods and oil.
  • Meat.

Foods you should consume more of are alkaline forming foods. These include lots of vegetables, fresh fruits, nuts and seeds.
